I am Mother leaves the viewers anxious or even angry at the physchological harm that the main character Daughter a teenage girl ( played by Clara Ruggard) passed through while being brought up by a robot called Mother voiced by Rose Byrne. The fact that the harmful robot appears to be loving by talking and behaving like a human maternal figure makes one perturbed.
The movie starts in a repopulation facility after what is referred to as an extinction event has taken place. A notice shows that there are no humans present but only 36.000 human embryos. The robot developes a female embryo for 24 hours in a womb like structure. The baby is brought up by the robot in the well equipped state of the art facility. She is referred to as Daughter and the robot is referred to as Mother. When she grew up to become a teenager the robot informed her that she is the only human alive and that the world outside the facility is harmful to her. Daughter so desperately wanted to experience live outside the facility but the robot won't allow her.
One day, daughter hears a woman moaning out of pain at their door and she sneaks her in without Mother knowing. The lady was injured and told Daughter that a group of robots are harming humans and also that she was with a group of other survivors but she lost them. The entry of the woman (Hillary Swank) opens Daughter to a new perspective of thinking and she starts to question the truthfulness of Mother. She is faced with the responsibility of saving the embryos which she considered as her brothers and sisters in order to repopulate the earth with humans.
What's so special about I Am Mother.
The importance of family was Portrayed in this movie by Daughter. She considered the embryos and the robot as her family and she did all she could to save the embryos. Unlike the injured woman who shows the built in the nature of humans to value themselves over others. The woman valued her life so much and did not care enough to go back and help daughter save the embryos even though daughter saves her life.
You will love this movie If you like sci-fi and movies with robots but I advise you not to watch this movie if you are emotional because you might be sad or angry. It was directed by Grant Sputore and released on June 7th 2019. It runs for 113 minutes and is rated PG 13.
