Swiped

In this recent generation, most youngsters are almost always on their mobile devices or laptops. This has reduced the rate of socialization between people. The rate at which we interact has reduced probably because everyone is online and there is an app for almost anything. This comedy shows how young girls are desperate for guys attention and will do anything even agree to a hookup just to get noticed by guys.

Swiped is about James Singer (Kendall Ryan Sanders) who is a smart college freshman. His family members are worried about him because he is shy and always on his phone or computer so he has no friends. When his mom and sister dropped him off for his first semester they encouraged him to socialize with people and make new friends in college. James's roommate turns out to be the most popular student in the department,  Lance Black (Noah Centineo).  Lance is a play boy who just wants girls without any attachment or commitment. His ideal girl will just hookup with him without spending the night, asking for his name or anticipate a second meeting. He and his group of friends thought of an idea to come up with a dating app that will make this possible.
They discovered that James was so good and coding and creating apps so they ask him to make the app offering an opportunity that is difficult for him to say no to which is the chance to study at the Massechusets Institute of Technology (MIT). James creates the app and named it jungle and everyone seemed to like it at first but after a while the guys started taking girls on this app for granted and hurting their feelings and he realized it was a bad idea.He decides to make things right and shut down the apps.  Does he succeed? Watch the movie to find out.

This movie satirises lustful makes who just want to use girls and also ladies who fall for them because they do not know their value and self worth. There is no form of sexual activity in the movie but it appears to be on the mind of almost everyone. Pictures of ladies in their underwear are shown and uploaded online. Foul languages and some swearing occur in few scenes. A character commits briefly while another one farts loudly. Adults drink in several scenes as well as college age individuals.

In my opinion,  the movie succeed in passing its message of self value, self love , the importance of a good relationship and the dangers of rushing into a romantic relationship  . I recommend this movie to young adults especially the females. It was released on November 6,2018 and it runs for 93 minutes.  It was directed by Ann Deborah Fishman and it is not rated.

Otherhood

Parents try to bring up their children in the best way they can. They shower them with love and try their best to make them love a comfortable and happy life. But sometimes when children grow up and become independent, parents are often neglected which make them feel as if they failed as parents. Otherhood is a story of three friends Helen (Felicity Huffman), Gillian (Patricia Arquette) and Carol (Angela Basset) who felt abandoned by their grown up sons.
Helen, Carol and Gillian have been friends for long. They met when their sons were still very young and as their children became friends, they also formed a strong bond of friendship with each other.

The movie begins in a town called Poughkeepsie when the three women gather together for the celebration of mother's day which they spend together every year. They find comfort in each other because their sons have moved to New York city and hardly gets in touch with them. Their sons forget mothers day every year so the women spend it together but this year, the mothers get drunk and make a spontaneous decision to travel down to New York city to spend some time with their sons. The journey leads to the three women discovering new things about themselves and about their children.

This movie according to www.rottentomatoes.com is a "soulful, hilarious, and honest exploration of life after motherhood". It is based on a novel  called whatever makes you happy  by William Sutcliffe. This movie talks about issues like middle-age anxiety,  parent-adult children  and Infedility. Expect few offensive languages in this movie.  There is a scene of a man and a  woman kissing and trying to undress but they are stopped in a funny way but the man's backside was shown briefly and he found out that the lady was underage. A gay relationship is shown. Characters drink alcohol which leads to arguments, drunkenness and intoxication.

Overall, the message this movie is trying to portray is life after parenthood. As children mature and grow parents needs to change their life and live for themselves. The three mothers realized that their sons were adults and that they had to redefine their relationships with their sons, their spouses, their friends and most especially themselves. The otherhood was directed by Cindy Chupack. Written by Mark Andrus and Cundy Chupack. It was released on August 2nd, 2019 and it runs for 120 minutes. It is rated R for language, sexual references and brief nudity.

The Hustle

The Hustle is a gender-flipped version of the movie Dirty Rotten Scoundrels  a 1988 comedy where two con men dupe people which was also a remake of the 1964 movie Bedtime. The Hustle is sure to make you laugh and relax.

It begins with Penny Rust (Rebel Wilson) who is a con-artist in America. She leaves for a town in France called Beaumont-Sur-Mer because she feels that she would make more money there. On her way, she runs into Josephine Chesterfield (Anne Hathaway) who is also a con-artist but she uses a more classy method and it seemed to have paid off because she is more successful that Penny. When Josephine discovers that Penny is a con-artist she tries to lure her out of Beaumont-Sur-Mer because she sees it as her territory and she does not want Penny to ruin it. However, Penny stayed back and asks Josephine to teach her how to execute high class con. Josephine agrees but with another plan in mind. She trains Pen y and uses her in her schemes but she refuses to pay her. They quarreld and in order to settle it , they made a bet that whomever can extort $500,000 from a young naive internet tycoon Thomas Westerburg (Alex Sharp) will have the whole of Beaumont-Sur-Mer. Who will succeed and remain in the town??

The Hustle does not meet the expectations of the viewers especially those who have seen Dirty Rotten Scoundrels probably because they expect a complete remake of the movie but this version is more silly. This movie is a comic fantasy of women who use charm and scheme to dupe men. Previously,  con artists in movies have always been played by men except in  a few occasions.  This movie portrays the idea that women succeed ad fraudsters because men do not want to agree that women are as smart at them and even smarter. It also silently implies men's sexual vanity that makes them vulnerable to being manipulated by women.

There are some new jokes which where not in the previous versions. The funniest scenes are when Penny insults Josephine and also when she does something crazy. It was directed by Chris Addison and was released worldwide on May 10th, 2019. It runs for 93 minutes and is rated PG-13 for crude sexual content and language.

The Sun is Also A Star

Are you a fan of romantic movies?  Did you enjoy THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, THE KISSING BOOTH and EVERYTHING  EVERYTHING?  If yes, this movie suits you well . From the author of EVERYTHING EVERYTHING  comes THE STAR IS ALSO A SUN. This movie is based on the best selling novel THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR by Nicola Yoon. It is the epic love story of two teenage immigrants living in America they are Natasha Kingsley (Yara Shahidi, Zoe from blackish) and Daniel Bae (Charles Melton) an american based Korean.
The movie begins when The Kingsleys are about to be deported from the U.S back to Jamaica. Natasha sees New York as her home and she does not want to her family to leave. Her parents have tried their best to stop them from being deported but it did not work. Natasha takes it upon herself to find a way for them to remain in America. A day to when they were about to leave , Natasha goes to the immigration office to see if their case was still opened but she was told that it could  not. She was given the number of a lawyer who works pro-bono and handles immigration cases similar to hers. She called the number and spoke with  secretary who scheduled her for a meeting later that day.

Meanwhile, on the same day Daniel had to go for an interview that would enable him to study medicine in a prestigious university.  Daniel believes in fate and that everything that happens has a meaning and reason. At the train station on his way to the interview he sees Natasha from far wearing a jacket with the same inscription her wrote in his journal earlier that day. He tries to catch up with her but he lost her. He was certain they would meet again which they did later when he sights her on a train. He follows her after she comes down till she got out of the station to the main road. Unknowingly to Natasha, a speeding car was heading her way. Daniel sees it after it runs over a biker and d he runs towards Natasha to stop her from being hit by the car. Natasha was grateful to Daniel for saving her life . She was unhurt but Daniel insisted that he stays with her just to make sure she is fine. Together they spend a blissful 24 hours together and Daniel tries to make Natasha fall in love with him. Did he succeed? Did her family remain in the U.S?  I'm tempted to say more but no I will not.

This movie is a story about love that survives against all odds. It is a beautiful movie with a perfect ending . At first I was scared that it was not going to end well but the writer was so skilfull and did not disappoint me.  This movie was directed by Russo Young and written by Tracy Oliver.  It was released on May 17, 2019 and runs for 100 minutes.  It is rated PG 13 for som suggestive content and language. Rome in Love movie review.

Its summer and to mark this season, Hallmark channel has a series of original romantic summer movies lined up for their viewers. They named the series Summer Night Series. The first movie aired on Saturday July 27th 2019 and it is titled Rome In Love. This movie is based on the book Rome In Love by Anita Hughes. They are both about an  unknown or undiscovered actress with great talent playing the role of Princess Audrey in  a remake of the old movie Roman Holiday. Although the making of the movie was not shown, the selection and preparation of the main characters was shown.  Fun fact, the movie was actually shot in Rome which was a "wonderful experience for the cast" according to madison.com  and Italia Ricci was actually pregnant at the time this movie was filmed.

The movie began with the main character i.e the undiscovered actress Amelia Tate ( Italia Ricci) being notified by her sister Kathrine (Isabelle Connolly) of the ongoing audition for the role of Princess Audrey in a remake of the old movie Roman Holiday.  Kathrine encouraged Amelia to audition for the  role because she was a great actress.  Amelia auditioned and after a while she was picked for the role and she had to leave her home in Oregon for   Rome where the filming of the movie will take place. When she got there the director dominic (Ross McCall) told her that he wants her to remain anonymous until a press conference  that he scheduled to talk about the movie . The only journalist that she was allowed to talk to is Philip (Peter Porte) an American like her working for a Roman  magazine. Philip was given the duty to write an expose on Amelia in order to introduce her to the world and it was exclusive to his magazine. In the cause of the interview which took place over a period of days,  they became close although Amelia was unwilling to open up at first because she want to protect her family from the public and the press.

In my opinion,  this movie is just trying to recognize those who give up a lot to take care of their family.  Amelia is orphaned so she is left with the responsibility of taking care of her younger sister Kathrine. She sacrificed her acting career and a chance to study acting in London so that she would be there for her sister.  Kathrine appreciates Amelia a lot that is why she encouraged her to continue with her acting career which she really loves. Kathrine wanted Amelia to enjoy her life and to have a break from taking care of her.

Stay tuned to mztee for the review of the next movie in this series.  LOVE AND SUNSHINE coming out on the 4th of August. If you have Hallmark channel watch the movies and comment the one you love most.

Little the movie

Little is about a lady that transforms back into her 13 year old self in order to learn some important life lessons.  The movie begins with a back story of Jordan Sanders as a little girl (Marsai Martin from Blackish)  being bullied in middle school. Her parents tried to cheer her up by saying that the bullying will stop when she gets older because she is smart and no one bullies smart people.  Jordan misunderstood this and thinks that being an adult makes you free to bully and she made her mind to bully people first before they have a chanyto bully her.
All grown up,  Jordan (Regina Hall)  owns a successful firm and is rich but she is extremely demanding and makes her employees miserable especially her assistant April (Issa Rae) . One day when big Jordan (Regina Hall)  was being her usual mean self,  a teenage girl wishes that Jordan becomes little so that she will stop bullying people. And Jordan wakes up as her 13 years old self  the next morning.  Confused and frightened,  she calls her assistant April to figure out what happened and find a solution. They come to a conclusion that she needs to learn something from her 13 years old self  before she can become an adult again.  Does she return to her old self or does she continue life as a 13 years old.

This movie is a switch on the movie BIG where a teenager turns to an adult.  Although it is not advisable for kids to watch a fellow kid treat others badly, adult viewers will find it e5ntertaining especially if they lived freaky Friday and Big.  The movie was intended to show audience the importance of being true to oneself . In my opinion, this movie is trying to inform us that we are still connected with our childhood and some things we do may be based off somethings we went through as a child. Kids might no  get all these from the movie instead they may feel that being a bully Pays off because it seems as if Jordan became rich as successful because of her bad attitude while her assistant who is nice and kind was an assistant despite her efforts to get a promotion. Although a comedy, Little can pass mixed messages to the audience and the comic relief in it is when Jordan does something unbelievable either as a teen or an adult.  The movie contains a lot of scenes of people being treated as dirt or slaves. A teen tries to drink and she even drives . There are few sexual advances.  Strong language is implied and not spoken out but mild language like damn, crap and hell are used. It was directed by Tina Gordon Chism and was released on April 12,2019. It runs for 108 minutes and is rated PG-13  for some suggestive content.

Plus one

Plus one is a romantic comedy about two friends who are meant to be together but they keep on looking for love elsewhere.  Ben (Jack Quaid)  and Alice (Maya Erskine) have been friends since college and they both wanted to find love desperately. Alice ends up brokenhearted because her ex cheated on her meanwhile,  Ben is too scared to allow any of his relationships last  long claiming that he does not want to make the same mistake his divorced parents made.  Everyone around them seemed to be getting married even Ben's dad and Alice's sister and they did not want to go alone so they agree to be each others date to the weddings that they had to attend to avoid questions and prospective hookups.
In the process of them going to weddings together, they realize that they have feelings for each other and their chemistry is noticeable by people around them. Will they give their love a chance or will they ignore it and move on??
The cast did a great job although most of the scenes happen at the ten weddings Ben and Alice attend but the weddings are separated. I recommend this movie to you if you love romance or comedy and fans of romcom will love this because it puts a twist in the cliche form of romantic comedy.  It was directed and produced by bot Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer.  It was released on June 14th 2019 and it runs for 99 minutes. It is not rated at this moment.
